FGI 2014 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities AND Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities

Hospital/Outpatient: The 2014 edition separated the requirements for hospitals and outpatient facilities from those for residential care facilities for the first time. The 2014 Hospital/Outpatient Guidelines includes improved application guidance, the addition of a safety risk assessment (SRA), and considerations for bariatric-specific design. New chapters were added for children’s hospitals and critical access hospitals. Other revised and new content addresses freestanding emergency care facilities, hybrid operating rooms, imaging services, and observation units, among other topics.

 

As with the previous edition, ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170: Ventilation of Health Care Facilities was incorporated into the 2014 Hospital/Outpatient Guidelines to provide ventilation requirements for health care facilities. The 2014 edition of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Outpatient Facilities includes the 2013 edition of ASHRAE 170, with all addenda approved through November 2013.

Residential: The 2014 edition of the Guidelines features the first standalone document for residential care facilities. The 2014 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities offers guidance for nursing homes, hospice facilities, assisted living facilities, independent living settings, adult day care and adult day health care facilities, wellness centers, and outpatient rehabilitation therapy facilities. The requirements and recommendations presented move away from institutional models and foster development of facilities that offer person-centered living environments intended to provide quality of life for residents. New material includes a resident safety risk assessment; design criteria for serving individuals with dementia, mental health issues, and cognitive and developmental disabilities.

This document includes the 2013 edition of ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170: Ventilation of Health Care Facilities—including all issued addenda—with the exception of Section 4.1 (Compliance) and Section 4.2 (Administrative Requirements).
